De vertanding van de scooter bestaat uit een primair en een secundair gedeelte. De primaire vertanding is standaard vaak 'schuin'uitgevoerd. Dit wil zeggen dat de tandwielen schuin staan. De secundaire vertanding is is standaard wel recht uitgevoerd. Een rechte vertanding heeft minder weerstand. Een andere tandwielverhouding kan worden verkregen door een tandwiel met meer of minder tanden te plaatsen zoals de vertanding van Malossi, Polini of Stage6
